How to Follow Dress Codes by Completely Ignoring Them

I like to think of myself as a person that has the ability to understand multifaceted and complex information even when coming from a variety of sources. Moreover, I take pride in being adaptable and quick to learn new things.

However, one thing that I have never managed to wrap my head around is dress codes. Unless you are a very rich member of society frequently attending charity auctions, white tie is massively inconvenient. You buy a dress that will most likely never be worn again and proceed to worry about whether you’re dressed appropriately for the rest of the night. After that, any dress code between white tie and casual is just vague i.e. business casual, the most confusing term ever invented. And don’t even get me started on men’s dress codes…

Thankfully however, during the past year I feel that the fashion industry has slowly moved away from the strict rules of women’s dress codes so with that in mind, I rummaged through my wardrobe and pulled together an outfit that would most likely be deemed inappropriate, but that I would totally wear to a cocktail party. The sweater under silk/satin slip dress trend is one of my personal favourites, so I had to incorporate it. There is something about silk that makes it so luxurious no matter what it’s paired with, and the jumper underneath gives the whole outfit that grandma allure that everyone loves. Am I going to a fashion event or bingo night? You’ll never know.

Excuse my face here, photos like this are exactly why lip fillers exist.

If dress codes stress you, I wholeheartedly encourage you to not get bogged down in them and just go with your gut. Who said a turtleneck isn’t appropriate for a cocktail party?

Also, since men’s dress codes not only confuse but stress me, I had to share this 100% easy men’s style guide. It's no secret that I have always struggled with men’s fashion. Put me in front of a men's store and I would have no idea what goes with what - I would probably pick out the worst outfit possible. Last week however, I got saved by the wonderful team at The Black Tux who created this super useful style guide of men’s dress codes that you can share with everyone you know! I think they might be psychic because they definitely read my (confused) mind by sending this through. I’m not the biggest fan of fashion rules (let’s be honest, most of them are stupid) but an easy framework like this one definitely helps my strained brain cells when it comes to adorning the opposite sex.
You also don’t have to worry about spending way too much money on buying a tux that you will only wear once, because the guys at The Black Tux do rentals as well. The only downside is that they're exclusive to the US and Canada at the moment but fingers crossed the UK will have the service soon as well!

This style guide is so useful that I am seriously considering creating my own for women (unfortunately The Black Tux only cater for menswear) - I just need to somehow make my horrible drawing skills great...

Enough with my blabbering though, what do you think of dress codes? Necessary evil or irrelevant concept?
